Dental procedures can be very anxiety-inducing, especially if you have a lot of work done at once.
Just the thought of sitting in a dentist’s chair can make your heart race and your palms sweat. You may feel like you’re powerless to stop the drill or the poking and prodding.
Nitrous oxide sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to calm your nerves and get through your dental procedure without any fear or discomfort. The nitrous oxide will help you relax, so you can focus on getting the dental work done that you need.
It is also the method of choice when treating children who may be nervous about treatment they need or if there are concerns of them being able to get the work they need done comfortably. We want to try our best to make sure the little ones in our practice have a comfortable, positive experience when they do need work done so we can try to avoid creating dental anxiety for them in the future.
What is nitrous oxide sedation dentistry?
Nitrous oxide sedation dentistry is a form of sedation dentistry that uses nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, to help you relax during your dental procedure. Nitrous oxide is a gas that you breathe in through a mask that is placed over your nose. The nitrous oxide will help you to feel relaxed and calm. It will not put you to sleep, but it will help you to feel more comfortable during your dental procedure.

What should I expect before, during and after my appointment?
Before your appointment…
You should not eat or drink anything for at least two hours before your appointment. This is because the nitrous oxide can cause you to feel nauseous. We ask that you also avoid alcohol, marijuana, and other sedatives for 24 hours prior to your appointment. Medications you are currently on will be discussed with your dentist at the consultation and whether to hold them off or not.
During your appointment…
You will be laid back in the dental chair and a mask that covers your nose (which we call a “bunny-nose” for our little patients) will deliver the nitrous oxide to you. The sensation of it working starts by feeling tingling in your fingers and toes, followed by a wave of relaxation. You may feel a little bit of pressure in your head or ears when the nitrous oxide is turned on. You may also feel lightheaded or dizzy. The dentist will constantly monitor you to make sure you are feeling comfortable.
After your procedure…
When the nitrous oxide is turned off, the effects will wear off quickly. You are considered back to normal after the procedure and should be able to drive yourself home.
What is the cost of nitrous oxide sedation dentistry?
The cost of nitrous oxide sedation dentistry will vary depending on the length of your appointment and the type of procedure you are having done. At East Mahogany Dental, we will make sure that you are aware of the cost of your procedure before we begin. We accept all major forms of payment, including insurance.
How is nitrous oxide sedation dentistry different from IV and oral sedation?
Nitrous oxide sedation involves inhaling gas through a nose piece. IV and oral sedation are given through an IV or through a pill in the case of oral sedation. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are also considered to be lighter or minimal sedation whereas IV sedation is considered moderate sedation. The biggest difference is that after being sedated with nitrous oxide versus IV or oral sedation is that you do not require a ride to or from your appointment, or someone to stay with you after; you are considered back to normal at the end of your appointment as the sedation effects are completely worn off.
