Going to the dentist can be a nerve-wracking experience, especially if you need extensive work done.
It’s common to feel anxious or scared about going to the dentist, and this often leads to people putting off dental care altogether. This can result in serious problems down the road.
Oral sedation dentistry is a safe and effective way to calm your nerves and make your visit more comfortable. With oral sedation, you’ll be given a pill that will help you relax during your procedure.
You’ll still be aware of what’s going on around you, and will be able to communicate with your dentist if necessary.
What is oral sedation dentistry?
Oral sedation dentistry is a type of dental care that uses medication to help patients relax during their procedures. While you’re under oral sedation, you’ll be awake and aware of your surroundings, but you’ll feel very relaxed and may even feel drowsy. Your dentist will be able to communicate with you and you’ll be able to respond to any questions or instructions.
How does oral sedation dentistry work and is it right for you?
Oral sedation dentistry is a great option for patients who experience anxiety or fear when going to the dentist. It’s also a good choice for those who need extensive dental work and would like to get more done in a single visit than they would be capable of doing without the sedation.
If you’re considering oral sedation, your first step is to schedule a consultation with East Mahogany Dental. During your consultation, we’ll go over your medical history and discuss your goals for treatment. We’ll also determine if oral sedation is the right option for you.

What should I expect before, during and after my appointment?
Before your appointment…
You should avoid eating for 6 hours prior to your appointment, and stop drinking clear fluids (water, apple juice, tea, black coffee) 2 hours prior to your appointment. Do not drink any alcohol, consume marijuana, or other sedatives for 24 hours prior as well. Medications you are currently on will be discussed with the dentist at your consultation and whether to hold them off or not.
During your appointment…
When you arrive for your appointment, you’ll be given the oral sedation medication to take. It’s important that you take the medication as directed so that it has time to work. You will be laid back in the dental chair with a blanket and set up to relax while we wait for the medication to take effect.
You may feel drowsy and dizzy after taking the medication, so it’s important that you have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
After your procedure…
After your procedure is finished, you’ll need to rest for a few hours and can eat as tolerated. It’s important that you have someone to drive you home and stay with you during this time so that they can help you if you need it. You should also avoid drinking alcohol or operating heavy machinery for 24 hours after your procedure, as well as taking any other sedatives.
What is the cost of oral sedation dentistry?
The cost of oral sedation dentistry will vary depending on the type and length of the procedure. We will provide you with a detailed estimate of your costs during your consultation.
We accept all major credit cards, cash, and personal cheques, as well as dental insurance. We also offer financing options so that you can pay for your procedure over time. We don’t want cost to stand in the way of you getting the dental care you need and deserve.

How is oral sedation dentistry different from IV and nitrous oxide?
Oral sedation dentistry is different from IV and nitrous oxide sedation in a few ways. First, oral sedation is taken by mouth in the form of a pill. IV and nitrous oxide sedation are administered through an IV or nose covering, respectively. Second, oral sedation takes longer to work than IV and nitrous oxide sedation. On average, we have to wait about an hour for it to take effect. Finally, oral sedation is less potent than IV and nitrous oxide sedation and is not recommended for more complex procedures.
